Acatenango Overnight Hike

per person

The most popular hike amongst travelers in Antigua Guatemala but with a Cultura Corazón trademark. We regularly collaborate with local guides to provide you the most authentic experience while contributing to the prosperity of La Soledad community. This hike test your physical and mental strength with the reward of a panoramic view from the summit.

The hike is divided in six parts, all first three parts are the same that in the 1-day hike version, then instead of heading directly to the summit the hike continues into the cloud forest until we arrive to our camping site. Next day starts with a hike up to the summit before dawn.

Tips for trip leader and local guides
1
Day 1 - Part 1/6
El Arenal: We start at 2,200 masl and this is one of the steepest  parts of this hike. It is very important that you do this part slowly and with consistency to keep your energy for the rest of the hike. The path has arid terrain and open skies, sunblock is another must for a great start.
2
Day 1 - Part 2/6
Humid Forest: The great Canac, one of the oldest trees in Acatenango, marks the start of the humid forest which last for about 1 hour to 90 minutes in this hike. You will experience how the weather gets cooler as the forest becomes more dense.  The trail we will follow is moderately steep with flat sections.
3
Day 1 - Part 3/6
Lunch spot: Once we passed the humid forest and continued for another hour or 90 minutes we will arrive to our lunch spot for a well-deserved rest and meal. Our guides will provide you with a customized lunch as coordinated with you in advance.
4
Day 1 - Part 4/6
Cloud Forest: This is the last part of the hike in the first day, it takes about two hours from the lunch spot and goes through the cloud forest all the way until we reach our campsite at 3,490 masl. While we set up your tents and prepare dinner you can relax and enjoy a panoramic view of active volcano Fuego. A once in a lifetime experience indeed!
5
Day 2 - Part 5/6
Summit: Our lead guide will help you wake up for a very early hike up about 4:30am – 5:00am (depending on the sunrise), you will have a warm beverage and start the steepest and most difficult hike up to the summit. Although short in distance it will take us between 1 to 2 hours. Here you must follow instructions as given by the guide very closely to hike up steadily and breathing regularly to reach the 3,976 masl in your best way possible. Once up, pause and look around to marvel at the breathtaking view of sunrise amongst some of the most emblematic volcanoes in Guatemala.
6
Day 2 - Part 6/6
Return: After sometime enjoying the panoramic view at the summit we will descend until our camping site for breakfast and packing. Then we start descending steadily, with no rush and good form to protect your knees. Once at the bottom we will drive back to Antigua with an expected arrival about 1:00pm
